History of the fortress The Smederevo fortress was built in the period from 1428 to 1439 thanks to the despot Đurđ Branković. There are many stories about its construction, which are retold among the locals to this day. One of them tells about the dream of the despot Đurđa, in which he was told that the new city must be located on the river, and after this dream he ordered the construction of a fortress at the confluence of the Jezava River and the Danube. The fortress was built with incredible speed and painstaking efforts of the then population, who blamed the despot's wife Đurđa for it, calling her Jerina the Cursed.
