Description
Durrës Monastery There is a belief that the Durrës Monastery was originally built on a wheat field, and then the material was transferred to Durrës and the church was completed there. It is located ten kilometers from Kragujevac, in the valley of the Dračka river. It is kept as a cultural monument of great importance and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. If we can be guided by the inscription above the church door, it was erected by Staniša Marković Mlatiša in 1734. In the 19th century, the monastery was rebuilt by Toma Vučić, who added a bell tower on the western side of the building. From its foundation until 1958, Durrës was a male monastery, when the abbess Jelena Jokić took over the administration, and then it became a female monastery. Jovan Dimitrijević Dobrača, commander of the Serbian army in the Battle of Ljubić, was buried in the courtyard of the monastery. The appearance of the building is inspired by Moravian architecture.
