Description

Rukumija Monastery Rukumija Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located not far from Požarevac, on the road to Drmno and Kostolac, in the village of Bradarac, in the Braničevo eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The first mention and detailed description of Rukumija was left by Maksim Ratković in 1733. According to him, the church was dedicated to St. Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ, it was built of stone and was arched with a stone vault. The roof covering was made of tiles, and in addition to the altar and nave, the church also had a wooden chancel in which was the grave of Martyr Sinaite. The church was of small dimensions, until the First Serbian Uprising, when the Turks, suppressing the uprising, demolished it. Today's Rukumija monastery church has a very simple form, it has a single nave base with a chancel on the west side and a semicircular apse on the east side. Written information says that the church was painted in 1829 by Moler Janja.
