Description
Rajinovac Monastery Rajinovac Monastery with the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is located 30 km from Belgrade, in the Begaljica settlement of the Grocka municipality. The first written mention of the monastery of St. Rajko dates back to the 16th century. Legend has it that once upon a time, a guy named Raja worked for a rich man in Begaljica. When he had served his time, Raja went home, but he was killed and robbed by the master's sons at the spring. In order to atone for the sins of his children, for the same sum of ducats paid by the Raja the landlord built a small wooden church not far from the spring where he was killed. It was said among the people that the church was built with Raja's money, which is why it is still called Rajinovac. The spring near which Raja was killed still exists today - it is believed that its water is sacred and has healing powers. The original log church was rebuilt from solid material in the 18th century, and the monastery was thoroughly renovated in 1793.
