Description

Rača Monastery Rača Monastery is located not far from Bajina Bašta, next to the Rača River and about six kilometers from its confluence with the Drina. It belongs to the Diocese of Žica of the Serbian Orthodox Church and is protected as a cultural monument of great importance. According to legend, the monastery is an endowment of King Dragutin Nemanjić, one of the important rulers from the Nemanjić dynasty. After stepping down from the throne, Dragutin governed the northern parts of the then Serbian state, and in his time Belgrade was under the administration of a Serbian ruler for the first time. Rača Monastery has an important place in Serbian cultural and spiritual history. During World War II, it housed Miroslav's Gospel, the oldest preserved book written in the Serbian literary language. During the war years, the monastery suffered several times, was looted, and its quarters were burned.
