Do I need a rental contract for a residence permit?

Yes. A residence permit (boravak) requires a rental contract in Serbian (or a notarised translation) plus address registration (beli karton) filed by the landlord with the police within 24 hours of moving in.

What deposit is usual when renting?

Usually one month's rent. Some landlords ask for two months (especially from foreigners), but that is negotiable. It is returned when you move out if the flat is in order.

Basics: electricity (struja), gas or heating in winter (grejanje), water and internet. Sometimes part of it is included in the rent, sometimes not — ask. In winter utilities can add €80-150 to the rent.

SerbiaHub has a “pets allowed” filter. Roughly 15% of 20 000+ housing listings allow animals; an extra deposit is often required.
