Transporting a pet from EU countries to Serbia - it's not just "pack it in a cage and go". You need to gather the right documents, make sure the chip and vaccinations meet the requirements, and be ready for border checks. Below is what is actually required and how much it costs.

Main requirements

Serbia applies EU Regulation No 576/2013. For dogs, cats and ferrets from EU member states the following are mandatory:

Violation of any item can lead to the animal being returned or quarantined for up to 30 days.

How to prepare the pet

1. Microchip

The chip must be placed before the first rabies vaccination. If your animal already has a chip, check whether it complies with ISO 11784/11785; otherwise it will need to be re-implanted.

WhereCost
Veterinary clinics in Serbia20-40 EUR (1 500-3 000 RSD)
In EU countries30-60 EUR

2. Rabies vaccination

For the first vaccination a 21-day interval after the chip is required. Booster vaccinations can be given without waiting if the previous one was timely.

WhereCost
Serbia15-30 EUR (1 200-2 500 RSD)
EU20-50 EUR

The vaccine must be registered in an EU country (e.g., Rabisin - Germany, Rabisin Vet - Poland, Rabisin - Croatia). An expired vaccine is a direct reason for entry denial.

3. EU veterinary passport

Issued by a veterinarian in the country of residence. It records the chip, vaccination and, if needed, a veterinary control mark. The passport is valid for life as long as rabies vaccinations are kept up to date.

4. Veterinary control at the border

When entering through any border crossing point (Croatia, Hungary, Romania) officials check the chip, vaccination and passport. With a complete set the procedure takes 10-30 minutes; violations can result in denial or quarantine.

What is checked

  1. Presentation of the veterinary passport, owner's passport and, if available, the animal's registration certificate.
  2. Reading the chip and matching it with the passport data.
  3. Checking the date and validity period of the rabies vaccination.
  4. If everything is in order, a mark is placed in the passport.
