Orthodox Easter in Serbia

In 2026 the Orthodox Easter in Serbia falls on April 12 - a rare coincidence with Catholic Easter, caused by the Julian calendar of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

## Dates and calendar

Easter is considered a public holiday. All institutions (except churches and some restaurants) are closed from the evening of Good Friday (April 10) until Monday (April 13). Public transport switches to a reduced schedule, and intercity buses and trains are often overcrowded.

## Traditions and rites

### Holy Saturday (April 11)

Believers bring **kulichi** (pascha breads) and painted eggs to the church for blessing. The blessed foods symbolize Christ's resurrection and family unity.

### Easter dinner

The traditional table looks like this:

- **Pisanca** - decorated eggs, usually dyed red using onion skins or food colourings.
- **Kulich (pita)** - sweet bread with raisins, baked on Thursday before Easter.
- **Česnica** - plain bread with baked coins or nuts.
- **Lamb** - roasted on a spit or in the oven.
- **Prženiца** - fried meat (usually pork) with potatoes and vegetables.

The order of the meal is traditional:

1. Blessed eggs and kulich are shared.
2. The first egg is dyed red and kept until the next Easter as a talisman.
3. After a prayer, the lamb is served, starting with the head of the family.

### Egg games

"**Tuk-tuk**" (*tučanje*) - two players tap the tips of eggs against each other; the winner takes both eggs. For cracking, onion skins, beet juice or food colourings sold in *Mercator* and *Dunav* are used.

## How to greet

Standard phrase: **"Christ is risen! - Truly, He is risen!"**. If you are invited to dinner, bring:

- painted eggs (at least two);
- a bottle of wine (e.g., *Prokupac* or *Vranac*);
- sweets (e.g., *ajvar* with bread or *lepinja* with cheese).

Giving money or expensive gifts is usually not customary.

## Recipes

### Classic Serbian kulich (pita)

| Ingredients (for 1 pan) | Quantity |

| Flour | 500 g |
| Milk | 200 ml |
| Sugar | 100 g |
| Eggs | 3 pcs |
| Butter | 100 g |
| Dry yeast | 1 packet |
| Vanilla | 1 tsp |
| Lemon zest | 1 lemon |
| Raisins | 100 g |

1. Dissolve the yeast in warm milk with 1 tsp sugar.
2. Mix flour, the remaining sugar, eggs, butter, vanilla and zest.
3. Add the yeast mixture, knead the dough and let it rise ≈ 1 h.
4. Fold in raisins, pour into the pan and bake 40 minutes at 180 °C.

### Lamb on a spit

- Lamb ≈ 5 kg
- Garlic 4 cloves
- Rosemary 2 tbsp
- Olive oil 2 tbsp
- Salt, pepper to taste

Rub the meat with salt, pepper, garlic and rosemary, let it marinate 12 h. Then roast on a spit 3-4 h at 160 °C, basting periodically with its juices.

## Where to spend Easter

### Churches and monasteries

- **Temple of Saint Sava (Belgrade)** - the largest Orthodox temple; the service starts at 23:00 on Holy Saturday.
- **Monastery Žiča (Kraljevo)** - one of the oldest, traditional service.
- **Monastery Studenica** - UNESCO site, attracts pilgrims from across the country.

### Fairs and festivals

- **Easter market in Novi Sad** (April 11-12) - painted eggs, kulichi, souvenirs.
- **Festival "Easter in Zlatibor"** - folk concerts, egg-painting workshops.

### Restaurants with Easter menus

- **Restaurant "?" (Belgrade)** - lamb, česnica, price 25-30 EUR.
- **Konoba "Tri Šešira" (Niš)** - local dishes, price 20-25 EUR.

## Transport and booking

Easter weekend - April 10-14.

- **Airports** (Nikola Tesla, Constantine the Great) operate normally, but delays are possible due to passenger influx.

### Accommodation

In resort areas (Zlatibor, Kopaonik) prices increase by 50-70 %. Book 2-3 months ahead. Average rates:

- 3-star hotel - 60-90 EUR/night.
