Vehicle registration in Serbia: step by step (registracija vozila)

How to register a car in Serbia: technical inspection, insurance, taxes, sticker and registration certificate. Documents, timing, approx. cost.

## Registering a Car in Serbia

**Main thing before you start**
You can buy a car without a residence permit, but you cannot register it. First obtain a valid residence permit issued for at least 6 months, and only then make a purchase. Serbian driving licence is not required for registration.

**New car from a showroom** - the dealer handles everything. For popular brands you may wait up to a year, so it is better to pay the deposit in advance. If you buy through a broker, they usually take care of everything as well.

## Buying a used car

- **Where to look** - the most convenient place is our [Auto section](/auto) - listings from various platforms are collected and translated. Be careful: rolled-back mileage, tampered VIN and hidden repairs after accidents are common.
- **Documents from the private seller**
- Passport
- Purchase-sale contract (written, notarised)
- VIN that matches the documents and is readable without problems
- Saobraćajna dozvola (technical passport)
- Insurance (if available)
- Owner's ID card (reported)

- **Buying in another city** - the contract is signed before a notary in the seller's city. Then either you travel together with the seller to your city and register, or you deregister the car, put on transit plates, or transport it on a tow truck.

## Who handles the registration: two options

1. **Agency for vehicle registration** - you go together with the owner, the agency prepares the documents, sends them to the traffic police, and handles the payment of fees and taxes. You only need to pay the fees and receive the plates.
2. **Do it yourself** - gather the documents yourself (see below).

## Required documents (do it yourself)

- Application for registration
- Technical form (registracioni list) - filled out at the inspection point, signed by the owner
- Purchase-sale contract (notarial); if there are multiple owners - notarised consent of all owners for registration to a single person
- Copy of passport (photo page) + the opposite side of the residence permit or reported ID card; residence-permit certificate (with ID card not required)
- Certificate of technical inspection in Serbia (valid for 30 days)
- Insurance (local OSO / "osaго") - usually issued at the same place as the inspection
- Fees: for registration, issuance of plates, stickers, registration certificate (payment at bank, post office or exchange office)
- Eco-fee (environmental charge) - amount depends on vehicle type, engine displacement and age
- If the car was imported from abroad and you are the first owner in Serbia - documents proving customs duties have been paid

## Procedure

Do it yourself: inspection → obtain insurance → pay fees and eco-fee → submit documents to the traffic police → receive plates, stickers and registration certificate. When working with an agency, the process is handled for you.
