Visa run from Serbia: where to go

Visas for Serbia - a forced trip abroad to extend the residence period when the temporary residence permit (visa D or temporary residence permit) expires. Serbia is not part of the Schengen Area, but it allows third-country nationals to stay up to 90 days in a half-year, so many expats have to leave early to avoid problems with document renewal. The most popular destinations are neighboring states with liberal entry rules: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary and Montenegro.

Why choose neighboring countries

Expats usually leave Serbia before the 90-day limit expires, because overstaying can raise questions when renewing the residence permit. Neighboring countries are convenient because:

Bosnia and Herzegovina: the easiest option

For most CIS citizens a visa for Bosnia is not needed. A valid foreign passport (usually at least 3 months validity) is sufficient.

Croatia: for those ready for formalities

Croatia - a Schengen country. Citizens of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan need a Schengen visa or a valid residence permit in any EU country. Possible entry options:

  1. With a foreign passport and a valid (or recently expired, if you have not exceeded 90 days in the Schengen area in the last 180 days) Schengen visa.
  2. With a residence permit in Serbia - visa-free entry is possible for up to 90 days.
  3. Through a sea port (e.g., ferry from Bari), but this is more expensive and less common.
