Electricity in Serbia is one of the key expenses for tenants and property owners. Bills from EPS (Elektroprivreda Srbije) often raise questions: why the amount increased, how to understand the tariffs, and what to do in case of over-consumption. Below is a breakdown of the bill structure, tariff zones, payment methods, and actions to take when errors occur.
What an EPS bill looks like: main sections
The EPS bill is divided into several blocks, each containing specific data:
- Personal details: name/company name, address, contract number (број уговора), issue date.
- Consumption period: start and end dates (e.g., 01.06.2026 - 30.06.2026).
- Meter readings: previous and current (kWh).
- Consumption for the period: difference between readings (kWh).
- Tariff zones: breakdown by peak (високи) and off-peak (ниски) hours.
- Amount due: with VAT (ПДВ) and without it.
- Payment details: account number (број рачуна), EPS bank details.
The electronic bill is sent to the e-mail address specified in the contract; paper versions are delivered to the residence address.
Electricity tariffs in 2026: peak and off-peak hours
Serbia uses a differentiated tariff system. For private individuals the rates for 2026 are:
| Category | Time (winter) | Time (summer) | Price (RSD/kWh) | Price (EUR/kWh)* |
|---|
| Peak hours (високи) | 06:00-22:00 | 05:00-21:00 | 12,50 | 0,104 |
| Off-peak hours (ниски) | 22:00-06:00 | 21:00-05:00 | 7,80 | 0,065 |
| Weekends/holidays | 24 h | 24 h | 7,80 | 0,065 |
*EUR/RSD exchange rate on 15.06.2026: 1 EUR = 120,00 RSD (official NBS rate).
Calculation example
June 2026 consumption: 300 kWh, of which 200 kWh in peak hours and 100 kWh in off-peak.
Amount = (200 × 12,50) + (100 × 7,80) = 2 500 + 780 = 3 280 RSD (≈ 27,33 EUR).
For legal entities tariffs are higher and depend on connection capacity. Details are on the official EPS website.
How to pay the electricity bill: methods in 2026
Online via the EPS portal
- Register at my.eps.rs (Serbian phone number and JMBG are required).
- In your personal account select the bill and pay by card or from the account. Commission - 0 RSD if the card is from a Serbian bank.
EPS mobile app
- Available for Android and iOS: Google Play, App Store.
- Through the app you can pay the bill, check meter readings and receive notifications.
Bank transfers
- Via internet banking of any Serbian bank (Raiffeisen, UniCredit, Banca Intesa, etc.).
- In the payment reference you must include the contract number (број уговора).
EPS cash desks and partner points
- Payment at EPS offices or post offices of Pošte Srbije.
- Commission - up to 50 RSD (≈ 0,42 EUR).
Auto-payment (standing order)
- Set up auto-payment through your bank - convenient for landlords, but keep an eye on the account balance.
What to do in case of over-consumption
- Check the meter readings - compare the current and previous values. If the difference is clearly exaggerated, the meter may be faulty or data transmission erroneous.
- Request a recalculation - send a request through the personal cabinet my.eps.rs, by e-mail info@eps.rs (attach photos of the meter and bill) or call the hot line +381 11 222 33 44. Processing time - up to 15 working days.
- Call an EPS inspector - if you suspect a fault, order a check online (Meter inspection request) or by phone +381 11 222 55 66. Inspection is free if a fault is confirmed; otherwise it costs 1 500 RSD (≈ 12,50 EUR).
- Dispute the tariff zone - if the bill shows an incorrect zone, attach evidence (photo of the meter with date/time) and contact EPS support in writing.
Important: if the error concerns VAT calculation, correction requires contacting the tax authority (ПДВ).
How to save on electricity: practical tips
- Shift load to off-peak hours. Washing machines, dishwashers and water heaters are best run from 22:00 to 06:00 (winter) or 21:00 to 05:00 (summer). Savings can reach 30 % for these appliances.
- Replace bulbs with LED. A LED lamp costs ≈ 2 EUR (stores BigZ, Mercator). Lifetime 15 000-25 000 h versus 1 000 h for incandescent bulbs.
- Install thermostats for electric appliances. A thermostat saves up to 20 % energy, price ≈ 20 EUR (store Technomarket).
- Check thermal insulation. In old buildings up to 30 % of heat is lost through windows and walls; double glazing pays off in 3-5 years.
- Solar panels. State subsidy covers up to 50 % of the cost. A 5 kW system costs 5 000-7 000 EUR, payback 7-10 years.
Common errors in EPS bills and how to avoid them
| Error | Cause | How to resolve |
|---|
| Over-estimated consumption | Incorrect meter readings | Compare a photo of the meter with the data in your personal cabinet |
| Wrong tariff zone | Meter setting error | Call an EPS inspector |
| Missing bill | Technical glitch or wrong address | Call the EPS hot line +381 11 222 33 44 |
| Duplicate charge | Re-payment or system error | Request a refund through the bank or personal cabinet |
| Incorrect VAT | Mistake in the calculation | Contact the tax authority (ПДВ) |
If you cannot resolve the issue yourself, file a complaint with the Regulatory Authority for Energy of Serbia (РЕРС) and attach all relevant documents.
