Mobile communications: prepaid or postpaid

Main Mobile Operators in Serbia

The market is almost entirely divided among three players - they cover about 98 % of subscribers:

• MTS (Telekom Srbija) - state giant, leader in number of customers.
• Yettel (formerly Telenor) - private operator with good coverage.
• A1 (formerly Vip mobile) - part of A1 Telekom Austria Group, the third largest.

All of them operate both prepaid and postpaid. For newcomers in the country prepaid is often more convenient: no Serbian address or bank account is needed.

Prepaid Plans (2026)

A SIM card can be bought in any store, supermarket or kiosk. The price of the card itself ranges from 200 RSD (≈ 1,7 EUR) to 500 RSD (≈ 4,3 EUR). Often the card is free when purchasing a package.

Roaming in Europe

All three operators work on the Roam Like at Home principle: in EU countries you use the same plan as in Serbia, without extra charges.

How to Choose

• If you need minimal formalities - go for a prepaid plan. It activates quickly, does not require a local address and is easy to top up.
• If you plan to make many calls and use a lot of data - a postpaid option may be cheaper, especially in the higher-tier packages.
• For traveling around Europe - any of the three operators will let you use your plan without extra costs, but if you often travel outside the EU, pay attention to the price per 1 GB in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, etc.
