Description
Preobraženje Monastery As with most monasteries in the Ovčarsko-Kablar gorge, it is not known exactly when Preobraženje was built. It is assumed that it was founded at the end of the 14th or 15th century. The demolition of the old monastery in 1911, in order to build a railway, destroyed the material evidence of the temple's past and its origin. The first written mention of the monastery is in 1525. year. Throughout its history, this monastery, like many others in the gorge, was destroyed and became a non-existent monasticism. There is no material evidence left of the original church, and when it was rebuilt in 1811, it was a one-nave building without a dome, built in the Raš architectural style. A few years after the restoration, the church was colorfully painted. Today, the Transfiguration Monastery is located on the right side of the Western Morava, where it was rebuilt in the 20th century, thanks to the efforts of Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović.
