Description

Sretenje Monastery On the wooded slopes of the Ovčar mountain, in the most beautiful natural environment of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, there is the Sretenje Monastery. As with most of the monasteries in the Ovčarsko-Kablar gorge, it is not known exactly when it was built. According to previous research, it is believed that the monastery was built in the 16th century, and its sufferings throughout history were frequent. It is assumed that Sretenje dates back to the Middle Ages or that it was built on the foundations of an older building. The first written mention of the monastery was in 1528. Today, it is not known in detail what the original church of the Sretenje monastery looked like, nor later when it was rebuilt in the 19th century. Today's church is a one-nave building without a dome and with a chancel above which a belfry was erected. The interior of the temple is dark, as there are few narrow windows on the temple.
