What You Will Need

• A valid foreign passport (any) or a Russian internal passport to confirm citizenship.
• For replacement - the old passport (it will be cancelled).

Nuances to Be Aware Of

• Russian House vs. Consulate. At the "Russian House" fingerprints are often not taken, which can cause problems when crossing the border.
• Two passports - gold standard. Having two foreign passports with different expiration dates eliminates many difficulties when applying for visas.

When obtaining a personal residence permit card, the link to a specific passport is not critical. At MUP (Ministry of Internal Affairs) you can "re-link" the residence permit to a new passport. Some consulates may clarify this point when you apply.
